And here's the A/B calendar for the secondary schools... What's this you ask?  DSISD secondary schools follow a block schedule.  Overall, a block schedule organizes the school day into fewer class periods, or blocks, which are longer than traditional class periods. Blocks are typically 90 minutes in length, as opposed to class periods in a traditional schedule, which are typically 45 to 50 minutes in length.

There are a lot of advantages to block scheduling such as:

  • Students are in a course for an entire year, which may benefit mandated test results or AP exams
  • Gives teachers an opportunity to delve into more detailed lessons or facilitate labs or student collaborative groups
  • Supports deeper learning by allowing a variety of activities and differentiated instruction to occur during a single class period
  • Provides flexibility for students to take more classes (especially electives or remediation)
  • Students may be able to participate in internships or service learning off campus
  • Because students rotate between A days and B days, they have additional days to complete homework

But, parents and students need to know what days are A days and what are B days, here's your calender for that!
